Special Agent Recruitment

We anticipate hiring approximately 640 Special Agents in fiscal year 1996, which ends September 30.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for training as an FBI Agent, a candidate must be:

1.a U.S. citizen 2.between the ages of 23 and 37 when entering on duty; 3.hold a bachelor's degree obtained in an accredited four-year resident program at a college or university; and 4.have three years full-time work experience (law school graduates, graduates with a degree in accounting or a fluency in a foreign language for which the Bureau has a need may not need the three years work experience)

All newly appointed Special Agents must complete 15 weeks of intensive training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Classroom hours are spent by studying a variety of academic and investigative subjects accompanied by fitness, defensive tactics, and firearms training. Emphasis is placed on developing investigative techniques, as well as skills in interviewing, interrogation, and gathering intelligence information.

After graduation from the FBI Academy, a new Special Agent is assigned to an FBI field office. This assignment is determined by the individual's special skills and the needs of the Bureau. As part of their duties, Special Agents are required to relocate during their careers.

Salary and Career Paths - Special Agents

Special Agents enter service in Grade GS 10 on the federal government's General Schedule pay scale and can advance to Grade GS 13 in field assignments. Promotions to supervisory, management, and executive positions are available in Grades GS 14 and GS 15, as well as in the Senior Executive Service. All Special Agents may qualify for overtime compensation.
