Anti-Slavery International

As the methods of repression have changed over the last two centuries, so the face of slavery has changed, too. Many millions of men, women and children are still forced to work against their will, menaced physically and mentally, particularly, but not exclusively, those in the Third World.

The Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1839 from the previous groups opposed to enslavement. Now renamed Anti-Slavery International, it is the oldest international human rights organisation and the only one seeking to eliminate all forms of traditional and modern slavery.

These forms were codified by the United Nations in the 1956 Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery. ASI is proud of its primary role in shaping the definitions of this international instrument.

ASI's purpose is the elimination of slavery in all its forms, through research leading to:

* awareness raising * lobbying of governments and international bodies * public campaigning

all of which complement and support the efforts of groups with similar concerns. It also works for the rights of indigenous peoples.

ASI's main work today is concentrated on traditional slavery; bonded labour; the oppression of women; and exploitative child labour.
